TriggerTalk February Article – The Slippery Slope
When mocked and attacked by anti-gun groups for rejecting “Common Sense” gun control, Second Amendment advocates often speak of the “slippery slope”. The scenario of ever increasing restrictions by anti-gun groups has been evident throughout history.
When proposing new gun control laws they inevitably state “We know this action would not have prevented (choose a recent shooting incident), but it is a good first step” They ALWAYS imply that further regulation will be necessary at a future time.
The rush to “Do Something” and implement some sort of restrictive legislation makes them feel good, shows their compassion for the victims, and most importantly gets them in front of the cameras and microphones.
How can simple universal background checks /gun registration and common sense gun control lead to a Slippery Slope, They ask? Claiming they won’t go after our hunting or sporting guns, all they want is a ban on evil Assault Weapons, and magazine restrictions”.
Rebuttals to gun registration by gun owners citing events that took place in 1930’s Europe, the Soviet Union and 70’s Cambodia are laughed off as ancient history. This is 2014, that can’t happen here! This is just a list of law abiding gun owners and the guns they own, that’s all.
Their true intentions become evident as various states and municipalities enact such laws. One of the most egregious actions is currently taking place in New York City. In November gun owners began receiving letters requiring them to turn-in, destroy, or permanently modify their rifles or shotguns because they have “an ammunition feeding device capable of holding more than 5 rounds”.
The guns listed in this actual letter (below) are .22 rimfire entry level rifles used by generations of law abiding citizens for lawful purposes. Two of the three are bolt action trainers just like the ones on which millions of new shooters learned firearms safety and marksmanship. These are not the “Assault Weapons” we have been led to believe they want to purge from society. Ask yourself: what is the true purpose behind this confiscation?
After 17 years Canada recently scrapped its long gun registration in April of 2012. It proved to be very expensive, inaccurate, and despite the intended purpose of increased safety never provided any useful information to law enforcement. It was however used to require owners of certain previously approved guns to turn them in when the current politicians wanted to exercise their power.
Beginning January 2014, Connecticut banned the sale of Modern Sporting Rifles, certain semi-auto pistols/shotguns and magazines with a capacity over 10 rounds. Current owners of affected firearms and magazines must register them or face fines, Class D felony charges and one year in jail.
Law abiding CT gun owners line up to register their firearms and magazines.
Watch out for that Slippery Slope, there is no telling what the state will do with that information!

We had a lot of fun this week and talked to several callers.
In the first segment I enjoyed talking to Bill from “Bills Barbershop” in Saline, MI. Bill has been a friend for decades and has help to instill the love of firearms, Shooting Sports, and the Outdoors in his clientele.
Bill explains about his game mounts in the Barbershop, and his support for a new generation of hunters. I have seen how proud young hunters are when they bring in their first Buck or Doe to show Bill. For many it is a right of passage in their development as a hunter!
In the second segment caller Phil from Salem Township wanted to know about handloading for a lever gun with a tubular Magazine. We talked about Flex tip bullets such as the Hornady FTX which is designed to prevent a “chain fire” in the magazine while still giving good ballistic performance.
Phil also wanted to know about using some round nosed soft tip 180 gr. projectiles in the 30-30. I checked and have been unable to find a recommended loading for a 180 gr bullet in a 30-30. I also would be concern that it may not fit correctly depending on where the cannelure is and also would the correct terminal performance occur considering 30-30 velocities. Personally I would suggest to to projectiles designed for the 30-30 no larger than 170 gr. or use the nes Hornady FTX in 160 gr.
Bruce from Plymouth, MI call to get a duggestion on the new Glock 42 versus the Sig P238.
An important issues was the recall of some Winchester M-22 22lr ammo. and I have listed the affected lots below:
Winchester is announcing a recall of two lots of M-22 .22 Long Rifle ammunition. If you have any M-22 on hand please check it now to see if it’s affected by this recall.
The lot numbers are GD42L and GD52L and the symbol number is S22LRT. This is a serious warning as some of the cartridges may be double-charged, which can lead to catastrophic failures and possible harm to the shooter.
Winchester is not mincing words with their safety warning when they say, “Ammunition with double powder charges may subject the shooter or bystanders to a risk of serious personal injury and/or death, or cause firearm damage, rendering the firearm inoperable.”
We looked at some new ammo that promises increased stopping power in the third segment.

This week we talked about the Illinois proposed rule on medical marijuana:
We also discussed Ruger and Smith & Wesson’s decision to no longer sell handguns in California due the the Microstamping technology requirements
We also looked at the experience one Florida family had in Maryland that le to an appology by the police.
We also talked about pump rifles such as the Remington Fieldmaster, and the Remington 760.
In the 4th segment we talked about using devices to help us make our time at the range or hunting more enjoyable. If you have difficulty loading magazines, racking a slide or controlling a trigger, take a look at these products and this website:
And let’s be honest, doesn’t this look like fun?

This week we talked about new legislation in California that requires Micro-stamping technology be employed on all new firearms sold in the state.
I think it is evident to anyone that understands ANYTHING about guns that this “New” technology would be easily defeated by a criminal of even marginal intelligence. Not to mention that a revolver does not leave any expended brass at the scene which would totally defeat this plan by the Mental Giants that signed this law into effect.
The images below are the typed of microstamping that would be applicable on centerfire pistol and rim fire cartridges.
By the way is Rimfire crimes a big problem in California? Why would this legislation include entry level and training firearms unless there is an different motive for the regulation?
We also talked bout a New Study that show that “Mass Shootings” are not on the increase and that the banning of “Assault Weapons” will have little affect!
Don from the Firing Line gun store in Westland MI called in to talk about some of the new guns introduced at this years SHOT Show going on in Las Vegas. Don indicated he had an opportunity to fire the new Glock Model 42 in .380 acp. He thinks this will be a great gun that will serve the concealed carry market and probably be hard to keep on the shelves at your local gun store. Don also talked about the new Remington R51 9mm concealable pistol.
Bruce from Plymouth calledin to comment on the new Glock 42 and how in many other countries Glock has produced a .380 for many years. Many people do not realize that in some countries they prohibit civilian firearms from being chambered in the same caliber as Military firearms. This has resulted in the adoption of firearms that are similar to common military guns being available, but in other calibers such as .380 acp versus 9mm.
John from Danville, IL called in to discuss the Thompson Center Contender. A break action pistol that is often used for big game or varmint hunting. This pistol has interchangeable barrels that allow the owner to fire anything from .17 HMR rimfires up to major calibers approaching .50 caliber

January 11th marks the one year anniversary of the weekly broadcast of TriggerTalk Radio. Prior to January 2013 I did a monthly segment on Matt Clark’s show “The Clarkcast”.
I would lik to thank Thayrone and Linda from WAAM Talk 1600 for the opportunity to share Saturday mornings with all of you.
This week we had several callers with topic ranging from buying an AR15 in the original M16, the difference between .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO, to finding magazines for older guns, building guns from a parts kit and refinishing minor corrosion in blued finishes.
By the way I have had great results using Brownell’s Oxpho Blue and Blue Wonder Gun Blue / Black for small and even large areas on firearms.
We also talked about using website search engines that do not store, track, or share any of your search information. Two that were suggested by listeners were:

Happy New Year!
For the past two weeks I did pre-recorded shows due to my family’s Holiday travel requirements. Having driven over 2200 miles last week I visited my Daughter and her family at Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Virginia and my folks in West Lafayette, IN. I returned on Sunday the 5th in a blinding snow storm, thank goodness for All Wheel Drive!
This coming weeks show will return to LIVE, so please plan to call in to tell other listeners and me about your Christmas Shooting Gifts!
On the January4th show I referenced a Top Ten New Year’s Gun Resolution list by gun writer Max Slowik. We talked about each one of his ideas and how they might apply to us.
Additionally I posted links to all the information for the Scholastic Pistol Program a few paragraphs down under the December 21st Show. Please take a few moments to look into this fine program.

We discussed the passing of Kalashnikov and his journey to inventing the AK-47.
We also found out he invented a lawnmower too, I think maybe his true calling was firearms not lawn implements!
We also talked about a few neat ideas for Christmas gifts:
If the shooter in your life also enjoys listening to music from and Ipod or smartphone this may just be the thing for them! Are these the coolest Ear Buds ever? I am curious at to the TSA reaction if you had a pair of these dangling around your neck or in your ears!
Merry Christmas and Safe Shooting!
