Fun Show today, We talked about some Michigan as well as National Legislation, Handloading and other topics including a Pastafarian gun protest in Australia!

Pastafarian gun protest

Although the man did as a joke, police didn’t think it was funny, but maybe that’s the joke.

Guy Albon, 30, is a “Pastafarian,” or a practitioner of the satirical religious movement Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. So when he went to have his firearms license photo taken he wore a spaghetti colander on his head as part of his religious garb.

When local law enforcement found out they confiscated his guns and ordered him to see a psychiatrist, Australian media reports.

“The law stipulates you can have something on your head… but you have to have your entire face uncovered and if the headgear is being worn it has to have some religious significance,” Albon said. “I thought, ‘I’ve got this one in the bag’… it was an absolute scream.”

While Albon said he was in compliance with local laws, two uniformed officers appeared at his home and seized two rifles and two handguns, saying they’d return the firearms once a psychiatrist deemed he was safe to have weapons.

Albon later passed his psychological evaluation, but police said he had to retake the photo without the colander.

Albon said his involvement in the Pastafarian movement is mostly for kicks, but is also meant to demonstrate Australia’s religious freedoms.

In the coming months, Albon has renew his driver’s license, and he said he’ll be wearing his colander for that photo too.

“What are they gonna do, come and take my car off me?” Albon said.

Fun Show Today:

Long time listener John From Danville IL  called to talk about “Bug out Bags”, and what he and his wife have put in theirs. This is a subject we should all think about for Emergency Preparedness.

Marc Whitemore from California was my guest in the second and third segments to talk about a group that he formed called “Gays With Guns”.

Marc talked about the reason that he formed the group,  breaking down some of the stereotypes about gun owners.  Marc pointed out that ALL people have Second Amendment Rights, and that ALL people need to be able to defend themselves.

As we talked further,  Marc talked about his early experiences with guns on his family farm in upstate New York and we talked about collection Mil Surp rifles. Turns out Mark is a Garand fan and purchased his from CMP just down the road at Camp Perry. Mark and I also talked about the Mosin Nagant which is a great way for people to get into Mil Surp collecting without breaking the budget.

My purpose for having Marc on the show was to highlight that all people that enjoy their Second Amendment rights need to stick together.  The anti-gun groups are trying to divide and conquer us and we must not let them succeed.

If someone tells me a shooter is Gay, my primary concern is :  How do they shoot?  and are they safe? (Also what cool guns do they have?) I really don’t care about anything else.

Let’s stick together folks!

June TriggerTalk Article – Back To Basics

I recently acquired a new (old) rifle. The late 40’s Mossberg 146B (b) is a great example of a well-made full size .22 lr bolt action rifle. This gun feels like a real rifle when you handle it due to its length and weight. This was a tool that was at home in the field or at the range.

Sporting a nice 2X7 Burris scope that was clear and crisp, I sighted it in and the gun performed as well as it did 67 years ago. However as I researched the gun I discovered it had originally been equipped with a rear “peep” sight. It also had a unique front sight that featured several different post sizes and designs ranging from thin and thick to a circular ghost ring that could be rotated into place for the specific task at hand.

I set about finding a replacement rear peep sight to return the gun to original configuration. At the same time I began to think about why it is important to learn to shoot with “Open or Iron” sights. It boils down to the basics of shooting and an understanding of ballistic trajectory.

In this day of magnified optics, red dots, and laser sights it is easy to forget that bullets do not travel in a straight path for very long. Those that enjoy long range shooting understand this, but many new shooters do not fully comprehend the relationship of the sights and the bullet path.

Most guns come equipped with sights, although some rifles do not and come only with mounts for optics. And while I am a big fan of lasers on my carry guns, I firmly feel that a new shooter should learn on a handgun or rifle with open or iron sights.

Know the relationship between the front and rear sight. If you are shooting low at 50 yards with a .22 rifle how do you raise the point of impact? If all you are doing is turning a knob or turret how does that magically get the gun to hit where the crosshairs are pointing?

It is important to visualize and understand that raising a rear sight is actually lowering the rear of the barrel which in turn changes the angle of the bore so that the projectile is on an upward trajectory as it exits the muzzle. The bullet travels in a parabolic path rising and then falling to hit the correct spot at the desired range. If the distance is greater the trajectory has to aimed higher.

Some open sights may have visual clue such as a step in the design of the sight to help with a visual adjustment to the aiming point, or in the case of a scoped rifle it may have what are called hold over points built into the reticle or crosshairs. The important point is to understand the ballistic performance of the cartridge you are shooting and how to compensate for it.

Open sights on rifles often have adjustable ramps or ladders for varying distances in the field and today many scopes have turrets that can be turned to a specific setting when the distance is known.

None of these sighting aids are useful without a good understanding of the Basics!

June 7th Show

Hi Guys,

Show files are up on the Podcast Page!

I prerecorded  the show this week because I was at the 2014 NRA Women on Target event at Tri-County Sportsmen’s League.  We had a “Blast” on the Pistol range with 70 Ladies going through over 6300 rounds of ammo.

This year I was assisted by Matt Clark, my broadcasting Blood Brother in Arms from WAAM radio, along with nine other great pistol coaches. The ladies had a great time and we now have 70 new shooters out there that are ready to continue in the shooting sports.

I will be back live next week on June 14th

I tried something new this week with the podcast. In addition to the individual segments, I combined all four into a single file and used a different compression to make the whole show less than 30 mb.

Let me know if you like a single file and if the sound quality is okay!

Fun Show this week, Lots of callers.

We discussed the definition of “Brandishing” and that a legislative bill was passed to clear up any confusion on the topic. I will find that and post it some time later this week.

Caller Dave asked about “Open carry in a car?”

MCL 750.227(2) prohibits a person from carrying a pistol concealed or otherwise (i.e. open carry) in a vehicle without a license to carry the pistol concealed.  MCL 750.231a details the proper way to carry a pistol in a vehicle.  There is no way to open carry a pistol in a vehicle.  If the person attempted to carry a pistol strapped to his or her upper arm in a vehicle without a license, he or she would be in violation of the carrying a concealed weapon statute and subject to arrest.
