March TriggerTalk Article: Your “First”

Life is full of “Firsts”: first step, first date, and first love…we all share these events. The list goes on and on, and may include your first beer, your “first time” and for some even your first spouse! Because I have always liked mechanical things my list also includes: first camera, first car, first airplane, and or course the first gun I shot.

My Grandfather started me on this journey with a BB gun, but in 1963 at the age of 6, I shot my first “real” gun. Stepping up to a firearm that burns real gun powder, complete with a satisfying amount of smoke, recoil and noise is a moment I will never forget.

Countless tin cans and bottles met their fate at the end of that gun, however that first shot is etched in my memory.  I was very young, but with a new found sense of independence and responsibility.

I was taught basic gun safety although I never heard of the NRA or the “Big Three” rules of gun safety. I practiced muzzle control, identifying my target and understanding what lies behind it. From that day on I treated every gun as if it was loaded.

Over a half century later my Grandfather has long since passed and the family that used to live so close is now scattered across the country. Today we only see each other at weddings and funerals.

Last week we gathered to remember my Uncle Raymond. Standing in his kitchen discussing some of our youthful antics (which often included guns) I asked my cousins if perhaps they remembered that old pump 22 of Grandpa’s we shot?  I always remembered that gun, that first shot and the hours I spent with it.  Did they remember which model it was or what happened to it?

Mark walked me over to the coat closet and there it was leaning in the corner looking just like I remembered. It had a few new dings in the stock, and a well-worn finish from decades of young boys and old men enjoying ventilating pesky tin cans or knocking squirrels out of trees.

Remington 121

Such a treat to hold and pull to my shoulder, the sights looked clean and sharp even through my old eyes with the aid of bi-focals.  A 1937 Remington Model 121 Fieldmaster, with a very satisfying click when you cycled the action.  After a few minutes of stories and describing how appreciative I was to see the gun again I placed it back in the closet corner and closed the door.

It was like seeing your first car pass in front you while waiting for a stop light, a mixture of joy and remembrance followed by regret for allowing it leave your possession. I returned to the living room and enjoyed talking to a wonderful family of young men and women that were only 2 feet tall the last time I saw them if they were born at all.

About an hour later my two cousins Mark and Mike called me into the bedroom and presented me with the rifle. They had seen how much it meant to me, the memories it held and wanted me to have it.  To them it was just another rifle and they had guns with their own memories of time spent with their Father learning to shoot.

As they say “there wasn’t a dry eye in the house”. We hugged and felt a bond representing 3 generations, we remembered our Grandfather and their Father whom we were honoring that day.

With the passing of my Uncle, I am now the oldest male in our bloodline and when my Grandsons come to visit this summer I will introduce them to a 78 year old friend of a rifle full of memories.

We had some good calls from listeners today:

Long time listener and caller Mike from Crawfordsville Indiana called to talk about the Mossberg MVP that he got his wife Elizabeth for Valentines Day,  Mike that is brilliant!

Mike chose well both with a neat bolt action rifle that accepts AR-15 mags and also his choice in a spouse. I would be in all kinds of trouble if I got my wife a gun for Valentines Day, You really have a keeper there!

Phil called in to talk about installing new tritium nights sights on his handgun. The Tru-Glo warranty states the sights must be installed with a sight press or by a gunsmith.  This is to prevent damage to the glowing tritium vials in the sites that might happen if someone is hammering them into the dovetail mounts.

There are presses made for specific guns and also some universal tools. This own will work on may models and can be found at www.Brownells.com

It was also an emotional show this weekend!

I told the story about going to my Uncle Raymond Dornhecker’s Memorial service this weekend.  I spent time with my cousins Mark and Mike Dornhecker and their beautiful families.  I asked if my uncle had inherited my Papa’s Remington Fieldmaster and if he did could I see it? It was the first gun that I had ever shot, and my Grandfather taught me to shoot it well.

The did indeed have the gun and I got to hold it and reminisce about those days so long ago. An hour later Mark and Mike called me into the bedroom and presented me with the Remington 121!

I am overwhelmed with the emotion of receiving this gun. It was the first gun I ever shot, it is the gun my Papa taught me to shoot and it started me on this lifelong path of enjoying the shooting sports and gun ownership!

Thank you Mark and Mike, you cannot imagine how much this means to me!

February TriggerTalk Article – Guns and the Internet

People have bought and sold firearms for 100’s of years. Today either directly from a manufacturer or dealer or long ago from the General Store when they went to town for their monthly supplies.

When I was young firearms could be ordered from an ad in the back of a magazine or the most wonderful of all publications the “Sears Catalog”. If you could save the money and get your Mom or Dad to write a check, a box would soon show up on your doorstep.

Today we have the internet, a virtual unlimited source of information to assist us. Many people look up historical information or specifications on guns they own, or would like to own. There are forums for all types of the shooting sports, specific forums for a certain brand or model, country of origin, or period of time.

Remember anything you read on the internet is often influenced by personal preference. It goes with saying that if you surveyed the members of the Glock Owners Forum  what handgun is the best, you could reasonably predict the outcome of that Poll.

One area that is often brought up the anti-gun groups is “Internet Sales”. You would think that there were websites called “Illegal Guns are Us” , “No Questions Asked Gun Sales” or “We Ship Em – You Shoot Em”

Internet sales and auction sites such as E-Bay has spawned similar sights for firearms, accessories and ammunition. In addition to typical websites for companies that previously used printed sales methods such as flyers, direct mail, and catalogs there are now stand alone online auctions.

Years ago if you were looking for a particular firearm you were limited to stores withing your immediate area or major stores with a national presence. There was often no way to connect with someone clear across the country that has a mint shape or NIB (New in the Box)  rifle or shotgun you have looking years to purchase.

Enter “Gunbroker.com”  which is often used synonomously for online gun auctions just as “Kleenex” is used for Facial Tissues.

Gunbroker header

There are several large auctions sites such GunsAmerica, Armslist, Gallery of Guns, Dury’s, etc… These offer both used and new guns while others help people find guns that are in-stock for delivery to a dealer.

The one thing they all have in common is that they follow the rules for legal gun sales. Whether you are a seller or buyer the transactions must take place through a Federal Firearms Licensed Dealer.

If you find a gun that a private individual is selling you enter into a bidding contest with others that are interested in acquiring it. If you win the auction, the method of payment is determined, you provide the FFL information to the seller who confirms it and the gun is shipped to the dealer.

When you go to pick up the firearm, the dealer performs the required paperwork (form 4473) and the NICS background check by calling the FBI and confirming your eligibility.

You also must conform to any required State or local regulations. If your state has a 3 day or 10 day waiting period then you must wait the appropriate time. If a handgun registration must be performed you are required to fulfill that requirement.  The entire procedure is that same as if you just walked in off the street to purchase a firearm from the dealer’s stock.

You may find a bargain, or a rare gun to fill that hole in your collection, be careful I have seen guns go for twice what they’re worth.

Good Discussions, Guests  and Callers today

Take a look at the idiotic device that the Ferguson, MO Police dept. is going to be testing. The first shot fires into a pingpong ball sized polymer projectile to be “Less than Lethal” and then if the assailant keeps attacking the officer the second and subsequent rounds will be normal.

Looks like you would need to leave it on all the time, because you certainly don’t have time to put in on in an emergency!

Finally some common Sense on this Zero Tolerance BS!

OK lawmaker introduces ‘Common Sense’ bill to stop punishment of children with toy guns

An Oklahoma legislator introduced a bill last week aimed at easing punishments for schoolchildren who chew Pop Tarts into the shape of a gun, use their fingers as guns during imaginary play or otherwise violate many of the school’s strict “no tolerance” policy when it comes to weapons.

The Common Sense Zero Tolerance Act proposed by Rep. Sally Kern will no longer allow school officials to punish, humiliate, intimidate, be condescending to, or bully a student for having possession of a toy gun that is less than five inches, building a gun from toy blocks, using a figure, hand, writing instrument or other object to simulate a gun or making noises which imitate that of a gun.

In addition, the proposed bill also forbids teachers and other staff from disciplining students who chew food into the shape of a gun, wear articles of clothing that support or advance Second Amendment rights or organizations or draw or otherwise possess or produce “a firearm, military vehicle, aircraft or weapon or any object that supports Second Amendment rights or Constitutional freedoms.”

“Real intent, real threats and real weapons should always be dealt with immediately. We need to stop criminalizing children’s imagination and childhood play,” Kern stated in an interview with News 9.
